York Residence
Designed and built by architect John York in 1951-52, this home endured decades of neglect, abuse, and incompatible alterations and additions before it was acquired in 2018 by the present owner, who has patiently restored the original interior to reflect its original form and character. Its exposed light steel frame structure, modular exterior wall panels, cantilevered closets, and generous screened terrace, spatially embodies a salient vision of how a modern, mid-twentieth-century family ought to live in the hot, humid, subtropical climate of the south Texas borderlands. Restoration has substantially restored the material and spatial integrity of the house. This bold, brilliant modern design once again resonates with the inventiveness and ingenuity of its original architect.
