The Lyford Rural Health Clinic was envisioned by Dr. Mario Sanchez and the City of Lyford to serve this community that, up to the time, did not have a medical clinic within its city limits. Lyford is an agricultural community, and it was important to respond with a building that was respectful of that culture and would instill a sense of pride in the community. The project had a very limited budget, and the design response was to use simple, cost effective materials – much like agricultural structures are built. Polycarbonate panels (typically used for greenhouse structures) provide an abundance of natural light to all exam rooms and workspaces while providing visual privacy due to the corrugated nature of the material. The lobby’s glass makes strong visual connections to the surrounding (working) cotton fields and is arranged in such a manner that eliminates direct solar heat gain. Bright pops of color throughout liven the material palette and are a symbolic reminder of flowering springtime crops.
